Rockstar Games has officially confirmed that development of the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series is underway.
In a Grand Theft Auto Community Update published on February 4, 2022, Rockstar addressed years of speculation surrounding the future of the franchise and confirmed for the first time that work on the next Grand Theft Auto title was already progressing.
The announcement appeared near the end of a broader update focused mainly on GTA Online and the then-upcoming PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions of Grand Theft Auto V. But for fans waiting for the future of the series, one paragraph changed everything.
Rockstar said that, with the continued success and unprecedented longevity of Grand Theft Auto V, the studio understood that players had been asking about a new entry in the franchise. The company then confirmed that active development of the next Grand Theft Auto game was well underway.
At the time, Rockstar did not reveal the title, setting, characters, platforms, release window or any footage. There was also no mention yet of Vice City, Leonida, Jason or Lucia.
Even so, the statement represented a major milestone. It was the first direct confirmation from Rockstar that the successor to GTA V was actively being developed.
The studio also emphasized that its goal with every new project is to move significantly beyond what it had delivered before. Rockstar promised to share more information when the team was ready and directed fans to follow the Rockstar Newswire for official updates.
Later that same year, Rockstar explained that it had been moving more development resources toward the next Grand Theft Auto project, with the aim of exceeding player expectations.
What was still simply described as “the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series” would eventually be officially revealed as Grand Theft Auto VI.
For the GTA community, February 4, 2022 therefore marks the beginning of the official GTA VI timeline: the moment Rockstar publicly confirmed that the next generation of Grand Theft Auto was on the way.
