Rockstar Games has officially announced that the first trailer for the next Grand Theft Auto will be released in early December 2023.
The announcement came directly from Rockstar Games founder Sam Houser in a message published on the Rockstar Newswire on November 8, 2023.
The message was released ahead of Rockstar Games' 25th anniversary and thanked players around the world for supporting the studio throughout its history.
Houser reflected on Rockstar's founding in 1998 and the company's ambition to create videogames with the same cultural importance as other major forms of entertainment.
The most significant part of the announcement, however, was confirmation that the first trailer for the next Grand Theft Auto project would arrive at the beginning of December.
At this stage, Rockstar had still not officially revealed the game's final title, protagonists, setting or release date.
The project was therefore still publicly described simply as the next Grand Theft Auto.
Even so, the announcement represented a major turning point for the GTA community.
After Rockstar confirmed active development of the next Grand Theft Auto in February 2022, fans had waited nearly two years for the first official reveal.
Sam Houser's November 2023 message finally established a clear timeframe for that reveal.
The announcement also coincided with Rockstar Games approaching its 25th anniversary, giving the upcoming trailer additional significance for the company.
Rockstar did not provide screenshots, gameplay details or additional information alongside the announcement.
Instead, fans were told that the first trailer would arrive in early December.
Less than one month later, Rockstar would confirm the exact date and time for Trailer 1.
The trailer would ultimately become the first official reveal of Grand Theft Auto VI and introduce players to the state of Leonida, Vice City and protagonist Lucia.
November 8, 2023 therefore represents another major milestone in the official GTA VI timeline: the day Rockstar confirmed that the first real look at the next Grand Theft Auto was only weeks away.
