Grand Theft Auto VI has officially been delayed.
On May 2, 2025, Rockstar Games announced that GTA VI was now scheduled to release on May 26, 2026.
The announcement moved the game out of its previously announced 2025 release window and marked the first major change to GTA VI's official launch schedule.
Rockstar apologized to players for the delay and acknowledged the enormous interest and excitement surrounding the next Grand Theft Auto.
The studio explained that the additional development time was necessary to deliver the level of quality expected from a new Rockstar Games release.
Rockstar said that its goal with every game is to exceed player expectations and that Grand Theft Auto VI is no exception.
The company also thanked the community for its support and patience while development continued.
No new gameplay footage, screenshots or major story details were included with the delay announcement.
Instead, Rockstar said that more information about GTA VI would be shared soon.
The announcement was particularly significant because Trailer 1 had originally confirmed a 2025 release window when GTA VI was officially revealed in December 2023.
May 26, 2026 therefore became the first specific release date publicly announced for Grand Theft Auto VI.
For players waiting for the next chapter of Grand Theft Auto, the delay meant a longer wait, but Rockstar made clear that the decision was focused on delivering the game at the quality level expected from the studio.
The May 2 announcement became another major milestone in the GTA VI timeline.
Just four days later, Rockstar would release Trailer 2 and reveal a much larger amount of official information about the game's story, characters and world.
