Grand Theft Auto VI has officially been revealed.
On December 5, 2023, Rockstar Games released Trailer 1 for the next chapter of the Grand Theft Auto series, giving the world its first official look at GTA VI.
The reveal confirmed that Grand Theft Auto VI will take players to the state of Leonida, including the neon-soaked streets of Vice City and locations beyond the city.
Rockstar described the game as the biggest and most immersive evolution of the Grand Theft Auto series yet.
Trailer 1 also introduced Lucia, one of the central characters of GTA VI.
The trailer opens with Lucia inside a correctional facility before moving into a fast-paced showcase of life across Leonida.
Beaches, nightlife, highways, swamps, boats, luxury cars, police activity and social-media-inspired clips establish a world heavily influenced by modern Florida culture.
Vice City is prominently featured throughout the trailer, marking the iconic location's return to the Grand Theft Auto series in a new generation.
The trailer also shows Lucia working alongside an unnamed male partner during criminal activity.
Although the character would later be officially identified as Jason, Rockstar had not yet published his full official profile at the time of Trailer 1.
The closing moments focus on the pair entering a store together while wearing face coverings, reinforcing the idea that their relationship and criminal partnership would play a major role in the story.
Alongside the trailer, Rockstar officially confirmed that Grand Theft Auto VI was planned for release in 2025.
The company also confirmed PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S as the announced launch platforms.
No PC version was announced as part of the initial reveal.
Trailer 1 represented the first time Rockstar publicly used the Grand Theft Auto VI title alongside official footage from the game.
It also formally confirmed Leonida and Vice City as central parts of the game's world.
The reveal became a defining moment in the history of the franchise after years of speculation surrounding Rockstar's successor to Grand Theft Auto V.
Rockstar had first confirmed active development of the next Grand Theft Auto in February 2022.
Sam Houser then announced in November 2023 that the first trailer would arrive in early December, followed by confirmation of the December 5 premiere date.
With Trailer 1, the secrecy surrounding the project finally ended.
Grand Theft Auto VI was official, Vice City was back, Leonida had been revealed and a new era of Grand Theft Auto had begun.
